Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max like to play with the notch

Take a pill to an island

The Apple iPhone 14 Pro and the Pro Max are the latest new drool-worthy smartphones from Apple. These are also the only two iPhones that deserve your attention, the standard 14 is just 13 with salad dressing (which you can read about here). Anyways, the notch is now a pill-shaped cutout, Apple iPhones can detect if you’re in a crash, the megapixel count on the cameras has gone up to allow more details and big file size and lastly the notifications extend out from the pill-shaped front camera cutout for a more ‘dynamic’ software and hardware experience. Oh, and there’s an Always-On display, FINALLY! So in short, there’s a lot to unwrap.

First things, the insides are run by the A16 Bionic which, as we’ve seen in the past with Apple devices, should be better, faster and more efficient. Do the percentages and numbers matter? I think not but what does matter is that 48MP main camera that does pixel binning that we’ve seen on most Android devices now. The quad-pixel sensor combines every four pixels into one large quad pixel, resulting in sharper and more detailed images but with a 12MP file size. You can also flex the full strength of the 48MP in ProRAW mode and click to your heart's content. There’s also a new 12MP Ultra Wide camera which should improve macro photography capabilities and an improved Telephoto camera that offers 3x optical zoom.

The 6.1in and 6.7in displays on the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max get Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion that (drumroll)... supports an Always-On display thanks to the new 1Hz refresh rate which makes the thing power-efficient. Needless to say, it makes the iOS16 Lock Screen even more useful, keeping the time, widgets, and Live Activities available at a glance. The display is also twice as bright as iPhone 13 Pro… oof!

The Dynamic Island, yes, Apple’s new term for a bubbly and interactive notch bar. The pill-shaped notch for the front camera and FaceID tech will now be getting more fingerprints than ever. Important notifications like incoming calls, messages and activities are seamlessly extended out of the notch through software. It’s a sweet way to interact with the little things without the thing hogging screen real estate or you using all your muscles to pull down the notifications tray.

The Apple iPhones can also now detect car crashes and inform emergency services and your loved ones about the incident without even touching the smartphone. There’s also an Emergency SOS via satellite which allows antennas to connect directly to a satellite and lets you message emergency services when you’re outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
