BMW’s cars could soon rival the experience of home theatres with its new in-car entertainment system. This new tech is called the BMW Theatre Screen, and was showcased at CES 2022.
BMW will essentially be fitting a massive 31in 8K res display with 32:9 aspect ratio to the ceiling of its car. When needed, this screen will descend to transform the back of the car into a “private cinema lounge”.
The display has touch capabilities, and can also be controlled via a small touchpad fitted into the rear doors of the car. The screen tech runs on Amazon’s Fire TV platform, and will use the car’s 5G connection to stream content.
When in Theatre Mode, the screen will make full use of the 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system, ambient lighting will be dimmed, and the blinds on the windows will be rolled up. All this is said to offer a theatre-like experience, but on the move.
BMW hasn’t shared a timeline for the roll out of the Theatre Screen or revealed which cars will be getting it first.
