Google Hangouts to shut down this November

And the migration has begun…

In an endless endeavour to find the perfect messaging platform, Google is once again rebranding. Hangouts will soon be joining the endless list of services Google has shoved under the rug. The supposed successor to GChat is now going to be called Google Chat. Anyway, long story short, you best be prepared for a transition from Hangouts to Google Chats as the process of migrating the users has begun.

The mobile app users can expect to see a prompt requesting them to move to Chat pretty soon. If you happen to use Hangout in Gmail or on the web, you still have some time, as they won't begin nudging you until July. The app will remain functional until November when it will finally be thrown down to the basement to meet the same fate as Google Plus and Google Play Music.

If you are still using Hangouts, your files and conversations should automatically transfer to Chat. You also have an option to download data before the app is discontinued for good. Users will also receive a warning at least one month before the next steps are implemented.

To make this switch to Chat more appealing to the users, Google will be rolling out new features on Chat, including direct calls, creating in-line threads in Spaces, as well as the ability to share and view multiple images.
