Instagram might be testing features similar to BeReal

Time to BeReal with the copycats.

Instagram has been known to ‘borrow’ the best features of several apps and master them, be it the TikTok copycat feature – Reels or taking stories from Snapchat. Well, the next app with a target on its back goes by the name of BeReal. Instagram's new feature in the works will randomly prompt users to take spontaneous selfies, which is pretty much the premise of the upcoming BeReal.

The feature is likely to be called IG Candid Challenges. Just like BeReal, when the IG Candid sends a notification to users at a random time during the day, they can take a photo with both their front and rear-facing cameras with the resulting image shared on their Instagram Story. You will have two minutes from the time of the prompt to post the picture.

There's no real timeline for the IG Candid Challenges public test as of now. And of course, there's always the chance that the feature will remain an internal test for Instagram's developers to test the waters.

That said, Instagram has been relentlessly adopting other app formats and features, despite backlash from users. In the past couple of months, it is evident that videos in the form of Reels are being given centre stage over images and the feed is similar to TikTok’s full-screen one. The app has also notably increased the percentage of recommended posts shown to users. So it’s more than likely that this feature will come to the public at some point in some form.
