Good news for Nintendo enthusiasts – the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has finally been unveiled, putting an end to months of rumours and whispers. The announcement came with a two-minute trailer showcasing the much-anticipated console in action. Highlights included clips of Mario Kart gameplay and a date to circle on your calendar – February 4, 2025.

The Switch 2 keeps the OG design language but levels up with a bigger frame. The Joy-Cons have a black look with pops of colour, and there’s a new button under the home button on the right Joy-Con. Bonus – it seems like these Joy-Cons might double up as a mouse. Additionally, the SL and SR buttons look chunkier, offering a more comfortable and intuitive experience.

On the hardware front, the Switch 2’s got some solid upgrades. There’s a fresh USB-C port next to the 3.5mm headphone jack on top, and the kickstand has a new U-shape design. The dock’s also gone curvier, and if you’re all about that classic controller feel, there’s a grip you can snap the Joy-Cons into.

The Switch 2 will be backwards-compatible with both physical and digital games from the original Switch. However, Nintendo’s video does add a little disclaimer that certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. So, it looks like it’s not all smooth sailing.

For those hungry for more intel, Nintendo has promised a dedicated Switch 2 Direct happening on April 2, 2025.
