The closest to the visual Holy Grail that televisions have come is through OLED displays. But even they aren’t without their downsides. Their superpowers end when it comes to brightness, the most important parameter for HDR. LG, the keeper of the pious technology has managed to give it an upgrade worthy of the Gods. Dubbed the OLED EX, it promises Evolution and Experience. Whatever!
Dig into the science of it though and it gets even more mythical. LG has replaced hydrogen inside the light emitting diodes with Deuterium, a rare element that LG engineers have harnessed from water! It makes the OLED EX panels 30% brighter than previous gen OLED panels and addresses the key weakness - peak brightness. Philips will be the first brand to use these panels in sizes of 48 to 77in and will feature 120Hz, AMG FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync to lure gamers too. Of course it’s 2022 so there will be a healthy dose of AI-controlled enhancements as well.
Even though the panel is made by LG, this is a Philips after all. And they’re not giving up on Ambilight just yet. The 4mm bezel on the 65in panels will cradle an updated Ambilight system. No word is out on the India release yet, but we do expect OLED EX to make its debut through LG before Philips.
