It’s got the bends

Whether you consider them innovative or plain gimmicks, foldable smartphones are here to stay. The latest brand to jump on this bandwagon is Vivo with its brand-new X Fold. It takes an approach similar to the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series and Oppo Find N with a large folding screen on the inside and a phone-sized screen on the outside.
The hinge holding the two parts together allows users to lay the phone flat on a surface or at angles between 60-120 degrees. Vivo says that the hinge is strong enough to survive up to 300,000 folds, which is way more than what Samsung advertises.
On the inside you’ll find an 8.03in folding AMOLED display with 1800 x 2200 pixels resolution,120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. There’s also an Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) layer on top for added durability. On the outside is a 6.53in AMOLED display.
Under the hood is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, and a 4,600mAh battery with 66W wired fast charging, and 50W wireless charging support. For photography, there are four cameras at the back – 50MP primary lens, 48MP ultrawide lens, 12MP 2x telephoto lens, and an 8MP 5x periscope lens. Both the inner and outer screens have a 16MP selfie cam nestled in a hole-punch.
At the time of writing, Vivo’s foldable phone is exclusive to the Chinese market. Prices for the Vivo X Fold start at ¥8,999 (approx ₹1,07,500), and go up to ¥9,999 (approx ₹1,19,500).
