WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature called communities and we think it will offer an experience similar to slack or other cloud-based instant messaging services albeit with the protection of end-to-end encryption.
Aimed at bringing related group chats together under one umbrella, Communities, in layman's terms, is a kind of a group of other WhatsApp groups. It will help people communicate with an entire community and convene group discussions. The company also announced that individual groups can now have up to 1024 participants. At present, the maximum number of members in a group can not exceed 200. Going to be a big party now!
The latest feature will be introduced as a new tab at the top of chats on Android and at the bottom on iOS. With Communities, users will be able to build a new group (community) from scratch as well as add to existing groups. It also has a set of tools for admins like the ability to broadcast announcements to all members and the liberty to choose which groups to include when along with access to large file sharing and emoji reactions.
In addition to Communities, WhatsApp has also introduced an in-chat poll feature wherein users will be able to put a question on poll within a group chat so be ready to take sides. In the list of features, there is one more, now 32 participants can be added to a group video call.
Even though these features have been officially rolled out, you may have to update your WhatsApp to the latest version to join all your extended family in a group video chat.
