Xiaomi seems to have vowed to make a statement at this year’s Mobile World Congress because on top of the global launch for the Xiaomi 13 series phone, the brand has unveiled its freshly baked Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition.
The smart glasses that use augmented reality (AR) technology to display information and digital content, are wireless, meaning they don't need to be tethered to a computer or smartphone to work, and they come with a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 platform so we can expect it to play nicely with the Snapdragon Spaces mixed reality platform.
The Xiaomi AR Glass Discovery Edition is made from magnesium-lithium alloy, which is both strong and lightweight thus weighing only 126g. They come with three different nosepieces, allowing you to adjust to your needs and ensure a comfortable fit. For near-sighted users, an optional myopic clip is also available.
The highlight, still, is its electrochromic lenses. Laced with electrochromic technology, the lenses change their transparency based on the amount of electrical current passing through them. This means you can fully darken the lenses for complete virtual reality (VR) use, or make them completely transparent to blend virtual objects into the real world.
The Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition boasts a MicroOLED display with 1200 nits of brightness and a resolution that provides 58 PPD (pixels per degree), outshining the Oculus Quest 2, which has around 21 PPD.
The glasses also come equipped with hand-detection cameras for gesture navigation, making it easier for you to interact with virtual objects and navigate the AR experience. Overall, the Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition seems to have all the features that VR and AR fans could ask for, except for one major drawback: it's currently only designed for use by developers. However, fans are hopeful that there will be a consumer release in the near future.
