CES 2023: Sony reveals Project Leonardo, a gaming controller taking steps toward inclusivity and accessibility

No one left behind!

The Afeela isn’t Sony’s only concept in the works at CES 2023. The brand has now revealed the next step for the PS5 controller- Project Leonardo. While there have been improvements in terms of accessibility for differently-abled gamers in the past, Sony has lagged a little behind Microsoft in terms of more inclusive hardware. This new measure dubbed Project Leonardo will be a customizable controller that can adapt to the needs of any individual.

Sony didn’t spend too long diving into the details of the device but it seems to be a hub with swappable parts and plates that allows users to connect various other items, such as breathing tubes, pedals, and switches of all kinds to activate different buttons. This UFO-like device is a major step forward and can handle an analog joystick in addition to eight buttons which can be paired with each other or simply with a traditional controller to complement and offer alternatives to every function. Sony has worked hard at this partnering with accessibility groups like AbleGamers, SpecialEffect and Stack Up to tailor the device perfectly to the needs of a wide range of individuals.

It works in a similar fashion to Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller in that some stuff is built in and some you provide yourself. This is simply due to the fact that it is a universal product and everyone’s needs vary a smidge, so it is ideal to support the solutions people already have!

Project Leonardo is still being developed so we don’t seem to have any word on the price and release date but let’s hope it’s soon! We will inform you as soon as we get the word so that you can start gaming with everyone you love, and we mean EVERYONE!
