Ooh, is that a new TV? looks soooo sleek! But, why does it sound like cats on a hot tin roof? Physics, my dear Watson. As TVs get thinner, so does the speakers and subsequently, the sound too. Soundbars have gained popularity to mitigate this loss in fidelity and Denon is no stranger to audio, so it too has launched a new attack on the market.
The DHT-S517 is a 3.1.2 configuration soundbar that is ready for Dolby Atmos content with two up-firing speakers dedicated to playing height content. Facing the listener are three driver arrays separated for the left, centre and right channels of sound. Both the L/R channels get a tweeter+midrange each while the centre gets a full-range driver. Total speaker count is a substantial seven drivers and you also get a wireless subwoofer to handle the low frequencies.
Using HDMI e-ARC ports, the Denon DHT-S517 can be hooked up to any modern TV and let you use the TV remote control for volume for faster operation. For legacy televisions, there is an optical input as well. The Dialogue Enhancer, as is obvious, improves speech intelligibility and if that doesn’t suit your tastes, there are preset modes like Movie, Music, Pure and Night to better match your preferences.
