Here’s how you can enable Apple Intelligence on your Apple devices

A language barrier

If you’ve landed here, chances are that you’re scratching your head over the iOS 18.1 update which promised Apple Intelligence and the supercharged Siri but the animation and behaviour are still old. Right? Yes, that’s because currently Apple Intelligence is only supported for English (US) language so you will have to change your device settings a bit to get to the promised AI land.

For Apple iPhone and iPad:
Settings > General > Language & Region > Press Add Language under Preferred Language > Add English (US)

Next up, Go to Apple Intelligence & Siri > Language > and change it to English (United States)

This should give you an option to ‘Join’ Apple Intelligence & Siri.

If you don’t see any options after doing these steps, Go back to General > Language & Region > Press Add Language under Preferred Language > Add any second language you want but don’t make it primary. After reloading, remove the language you just added. This should force the OS to accept English (US) again. Maybe restart your phone and you should see the option to ‘Join’ inside Apple Intelligence in some time.

For MacBooks, it’s pretty much the same steps:

Settings > General > Language & Region > Press the + sign under Preferred Language > Add English (US)

Next up, Go to Apple Intelligence & Siri > Language > and change it to English (United States)

Currently, all Apple Intelligence features are not available. It can only answer basic questions and has some contextual awareness. Features that work as advertised are Rewrite which brings systemwide AI for writing and Clean Up which erases unwanted elements from your photos.

Siri still cannot hop inside apps and search for things for you. For example, if you ask it to open Photos and look for Motorcycle photos, it will not be able to do that. This and more Apple Intelligence features like Genmoji, image generation, ChatGPT integration and more are missing for now and will roll out by the end of the year or next.
