Meta AI is now available on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram in India

Update to the latest versions of apps to access the AI

Meta is rolling out its Llama-3-powered AI chatbot to all users in India. The chatbot can be summoned through the search bars of WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, or accessed through the meta.ai website. However, Meta AI currently speaks only the Queen's English, leaving local languages waiting in the wings.

Meta AI's functionality mirrors that of other chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude. The tool provides text-based experiences powered by Llama 2 and image-generation capabilities driven by Llama 3. It can suggest recipes, plan workouts, help you write emails, or summarise a bunch of text. Meta AI can also generate images based on your prompts.

On Instagram, Meta AI can recommend Reels tailored to your search queries. In your Facebook feed, you'll spot a Meta AI prompt that lets you ask questions about the post. For example, if you see a photo of the aurora borealis, you could inquire about the best places and times to witness the northern lights. In WhatsApp group chats, you can ask Meta AI for restaurant suggestions with scenic views and vegan options for your friends. Furthermore, Meta AI can create images based on your prompts. You must update to the latest versions of WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger to access Meta AI.

If you have privacy concerns, Meta assures that Meta AI only processes the text you use when mentioning or replying to the chatbot and doesn't access the context of the group’s conversation. While you can't disable or hide the Meta AI functionality in the app, you can perform searches without activating the chatbot, according to Meta.
