Sony's PS5 system update brings Discord voice chat integration, VRR support and more

Update to enjoy!

Attention PS5 owners: the gods at Sony PlayStation have rolled out a major system update (globally) for PS5 consoles that will probably make you want to kiss your PS5 controller and whisper sweet nothings into its microphone. Remember we apprised you about the Discord feature that will allow you to voice chat with your friends while playing on your PS5? Well, support for Discord voice chats has now made its way out of beta and to all PS5 gamers.

So if you have installed System Update 7.0 you can now activate Discord calls on your console and begin babbling. The latest update also adds other features that, at first, may seem minor, but can enhance the overall console experience and make it easier to play with friends, have combined seshes and transfer data.

There’s also support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for HDMI 2.1 displays with 1440p resolution. VRR essentially allows the console's output frame rate to match the display's refresh rate, reducing stuttering and input lags in games that support VRR. Some updates to the parameters of the PS5 console’s 1440p output test have also been made, this enables 1440p support for a wider range of HDMI displays. To check if your HDMI device is compatible, go to [Settings] > [Screen and Video] > [Video Output] > [Test 1440p Output].

There are also a couple of new accessibility and ease-of-use features for data migration from PS4 to PS5 or even PS5 to PS5. You can transfer your precious data like your games, saved data, user profiles, settings, screenshots, videos, et cetera either during the initial setup of your new PS5 console or at a later time by accessing the settings menu. And the transfer process won't even mess with or delete any of your data on the original console. You can use a local Wi-Fi network or a LAN cable to perform this data transfer.

For multiplayer session preferences there is game presets so you can set your preferences to manage who can join and who can invite other players to multiplayer sessions you’ve created for supported games.
