Good news! Despite rumours over the past week claiming that the Indian government is planning on imposing charges on UPI transactions in an attempt to help UPI platforms recover heavy operational costs, the government has denied any such plans.
You don’t need to be a finance bro, to realize that levying additional charges will slow down all endeavours to go cashless. The Ministry of Finance has clarified and further stated that the GOI is not considering any charges and that concerns of the UPI service providers for recovering their costs would have to be met through other means.
The ministry has additionally stated via Twitter that UPI is a digital public good that is very convenient for the public and productivity gains for the economy. The tweet states that the government had provided financial support for the ‘Digital Payment ecosystem’ last year and has announced the same this year as well to encourage further adoption of digital payments and promotion of payment platforms that are economical and user-friendly.
So doesn't seem like anything is set to change in the near future and you can UPI away to your heart’s content without having any additional charges applied to your transactions.
