VLC Media Player is no more banned in India

Revoked for good?

Good news for audiophiles: Indian users can now download the VLC multimedia player as the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) removed the arbitrary ban on its website.

The news was confirmed by the VLC Media Player developer VideoLAN via its official Twitter handle. The tweet also said 'Awesome work by the Internet Freedom Foundation' that helped them in getting the ban lifted.

The website was banned by MeitY in August on the grounds of it being used by China-backed hacking group ‘Cicada’ that allegedly used the website to deliver malware and took personnel data of VLC users in India.

VideoLAN, however, refuted the reports at the time saying that Cicada hackers used a modified version of the VLC Media Player for the purpose and not the one available on official Microsoft, Google and Apple Stores.
